Providing Individual, Family and Community Recovery Services
Frequently Asked Questions What population does the Adult Day Services Division work with? South Bay's mission is to work with a disadvantaged population, and many of our clients have little access to traditional mental health services. This Division's clients are adults, usually between the ages of 20 through 70. Most have a major psychiatric diagnosis such as schizophrenia, posttraumatic stress disorder, major depression, or affective disorder. Problems with drugs, alcohol, relatives and employers can also serve as reasons for psychotherapeutic intervention and Partial Hospital services. Clients who come to our programs have recognized that they have a psychiatric disability which is interfering with their achieving their life goals. Our focus is on helping people regain control of their lives and moving forward in the recovery process. The length of stay for each client is individualized, depending on their progress and ability to attain to their goals. We work to engage our clients as active participants in their treatment, and encourage them to assume increased responsibility in their lives. What services are available to clients? Treatment services provided in our Partial Hospital Programs include individual and group psychotherapy, psychiatric consultation (medication evaluations and monitoring), substance abuse counseling, psycho-education, dialectical behavioral therapy, and creative arts therapy. We also offer wellness and self-awareness groups including symptom management, life and community skills, relationship issues, leisure planning, spiritual health, and therapeutic recreation including yoga and other forms of exercise. The therapeutic milieu provides guidelines, structure and appropriate controls for clients who may feel confused or anxious. To enhance the functioning of our therapeutic community, clients are divided into three groups according to functional levels. Group I consists of those with mild symptoms who are transitioning to the community. Group II is comprised of those who have moderate symptoms and who need to attend the program at least four days per week. Group III is made up of those clients who are recently admitted, and who have the lowest level of functioning, including severe symptoms. We also provide individualized outreach meetings for all clients in our programs. These consist of team meetings and/or home visits done on a monthly basis, or more often as needed. We make every effort to collaborate with other support systems in our clients' lives and to integrate them into the recovery process. Who works in Adult Day Services?
